I have a need. I am a stressed out, worried first time mom-to-be. I have lots of friends with babies. So, why not take advantage of your great experience?!?!
I have been aimlessly looking for crib mattresses on the www (thanks Logan, Utah for providing NO baby stores, minus the highly over priced Stork Landing) and have come to the conclusion I have no idea what to look for.
Do we get coil or foam? Sealy or Serta? Spend $69 or $159? From Babies R Us or USA Baby? Vinyl waterproof covering? Do any of these things really matter?
So... what kind of mattress do you have? Where did you get yours? How much is average to spend?
Also, did you get a full crib mattress pad, or one that doesn't cover the whole thing or both?
I know everyone has their own opinion and it will be entirely up to me in the end, but until then I'd rather not take advice from lame reviews, I'd rather trust my great mommy friends:)
Leave a comment and let me know what your opinion is :)
And if you have any other great advice you're dying to share about shopping for other baby things- please do.

Lauren! I am so excited for you. I can't remember but I think I got my crib matress at the DI(They have brand new ones that you can get there) or we found it on sale at Target. They might not be the best but your little one really isn't going to care. I also had a plastic waterproof cover (just like a sheet) to put over it. You never know how many times you will have to change sheets. If I had to clean it I would just get a disinfecting wipe and clean it off and every once in a while throw it in the wash. Congrats again! And good luck with the little one!!
WELL, Consumer Reports is my second bible, so I always look there first for what they recommend safety and value wise. The coil ones are good until a baby learns to bounce/jump which can be dangerous at that point, so CR said the best bet is a firm, fire-resistant foam core mattress. Here is the link of the one we got.. it was only like $40 but highly rated and we like it a lot. It also fits more snugly in the crib than most, which is good so the babies don't become trapped. Also the firm foam only weighs like 7 pounds so it's a lot easier to change the sheets compaired to a 20 pound innerspring. Good luck!

Hey Lauren...since you have like 100 friends that follow your blog and have kids and I don't have...well...any...It would be TOTALLY awesome if you could ask for advice like this about the following items: crib, swing, breast pump, car seat, stroller, pack n play, rocker, diapers, onesies, diaper bag, carrier...you get the picture :) :)
Shoot! We should have talked about this tonight! I also checked consumer reports and chose one of the ones from their lists. That is a great way to choose all things "baby gear". Don't worry about price when it comes to mattresses though. More expensive is not always better. I believe we got ours from Babies R Us or Target. I also got the mattress waterproof cover that fits on like a sheet. That way it doesn't slip around. Good luck! Fun fun fun! Can't wait to start working on B's room with you!
I got my crib and mattress and changing table second hand, but I made sure the mattress was more then just a foam pad. Your baby spends A LOT of time in that crib so a good mattress is important in my opinion. I also use a wet protecting sheet thing under their sheet, you will change the sheets a lot in the first couple months so make sure you have a few! One other word of advice for the future, make sure you always have an extra outfit or two for Baby B in your diaper bag. You never know when they are going spit up/poop/pee all over the one they are wearing!
maybe joe has rubbed off on me too much, but i'd say that you should find the cheap one. i've never heard of a baby waking up with back problems from an unsatisfactory mattress. we got the $60 mattress from Target, and it works fine for us. my boys have never had their legs stuck in the sides, they sleep great, and they jump on their beds for at least an hour every day (they know how to climb into their cribs).
Lauren! We bought ours at Wal-Mart...it was like $60-70...Emma loves it =) sooo don't spend too much-they just want somewhere to sleep! Can't wait for baby B!
